How to use codes on PCSX2 Emulator

The PCSX2 Emulator codes are a real pain. It’s not easy to learn if you don’t have any experience with computers, or a naturally impatient person. This guide will help you set up codes in the easiest way possible. It will also highlight the most common mistakes that can be made while trying to get the codes to work.

Let me start by briefly listing all steps required for those who prefer to receive information in this format.

1. Your games CRC #
2. Search the PCSX2 Cheat Directory
3. With your CRC #, create a.pnach.
4. Download OmniConvert v1.0.3
5. Omniconvert converts your codes to an emulator-friendly format
6. The format I show allows you to add the code into the.pnach file.
7. Check your code for errors in the game.

It’s important to determine the CRC code of the game you’re currently playing. Start your game, then click on the PCSX2 Toolbar and select “Misc”, and then “Show console”. This will open the box as shown in the screen shot below.

Scroll down to the Game CRC= section that I highlighted in my screenshot above. For the purposes of this guide, I am using Dragon Quest VIII Journey of the Cursed King as my game.

Only the F4715852 last part of your CRC number is needed. This number can be written down or you can keep the console open to locate the PCSX2 Directory. Mine is located in Documents. However, it is possible that yours is in Program Files.

These are the only two directories that I have ever heard about:

C: Program Files (x86) > PCSX2 > Cheats
Documents > ComputerSX2 > Cheats

You can find the location of the cheats directory in My Documents.

To open this folder, right-click any file in it to open a list of options. Click “New” to make a text document. This file will be the one you need, but you can see in the screen shot that I also have many.pnach files.

This allows me to clearly show the difference between the two files. You’ll also notice that the files within this folder have suffixes, such as.pnach/.txt. This will allow you to see the files on your computer, but not in my screen shot. Windows 10 users can enable them by clicking the “File Name Extensions” button in the upper left corner of the folder.

Note: For older versions of Windows, you can access this option through the right click in the folder’s name and select “Properties”. Or, you can access Control Panel > Appearance > Personalization > Folder Option and uncheck “Hide extensions of known file types”.

Right click on the Text Document you created. Rename it to whatever game’s CRC # and change the extension to.pnach. This guide uses the file F4715852.pnach as my Dragon Quest VIII. Double-click the file to launch it.

Below is a screen capture of the inside file. It contains a few cheats I have added and can verify they work. Below the screenshot, I have the raw text version. We’ll be using this for the second part of this guide.

These cheats don’t look like the Dragon Quest VIII Journey of the Cursed King codeBreaker Codes page. To use any code from my website, or any other PS2 code that you find online using the PCSX2 emulator, you will first need to convert it into a RAW file.

There are many methods to accomplish this, but the most popular is OmniConvert 1.0.3. You can download . Although I can personally confirm that there is no spyware or malware in this download link, you should still run a scan to ensure it is clean. You will need to do this a lot – don’t blindly believe me. Winrar is another program that can be downloaded free of charge to extract OmniConvert.

Note For information on OmniConvert 1.0.3, please google the link. You’re sure to find it. It’s not large and doesn’t need any installation, so you can easily share it.

OmniConvert 1.0.3 & you

After downloading OmniConvert 1.0.3 via winrar, your next step is to open the Omniconvert.exe executable file. It will display the window in my screen shot. Depending on the type of cheat you are using in OmniConvert, go to “Input”, and choose the cheat from the list.

We’ll be using the CodeBreaker Codes on my Dragon Quest8 CodeBreaker Codes page for this guide. I chose Max Gold (Max Gold = 2A8B1C65 5F5E0FF) and put it into Omniconvert as shown in the screen shot.

It’s time to set Input to CodeBreakerV1+ and Output to “Unencrypted>Standard”, and then hit Convert to change our Codebreaker code from a RAW/Unencrypted Code. As you can see, the code will change from being 2A8B1C65 at 05F5E0FF into 20409840 at 05F5E0FF after you hit “Convert”.

The next step is to convert it into a format the PCSX2 recognizes. The RAW code can be copied and pasted into the.pnach. Next, scroll down to the previously mentioned codes and cut and paste one of them into.pnach. This is how we will use the code to format the document. You can delete this code after you’ve formatted your code using this method.

Please take note of the sections I have highlighted below. Your new cheat will need to be formatted in the same way as the cheat.

After you have formatted your cheat correctly, you can copy the copied code and paste it into the file. We can now test the cheat in the.pnach file to make sure it works.
