Rev-matching – What is it, why and how to go about it?
Not only does rev-matching ensure that your motorcycle is in good shape, but it can reduce wear and tear of the motor.
Rev-matching is one of the methods that is used to shift gears down on motorbikes. To explain the method in simple manner, it’s the process to match the speed of the engine on a motorcycle with the transmission while shifting down the gear.
If you lower the gears on a motorcycle, engine’s RPMs go up. If you do this without rev-matching the revs, the engine will feel sluggish and the vehicle will slide forward. This can be prevented by rev-matching during downshifts.
Why should you bother?
As we’ve seen that downshifting with no rev-matching pushes the motorcycle forward. This can cause to cause the motorcycle to be thrown off balance. This is evident when you approach a corner on a track with high speeds. In this situation will result in the motorbike becoming unstable. The jerk of the powertrain can cause an accelerated rear wheel. If you’re not able to match your revs the powertrain, you may not be able to stabilize your bike in such a scenario.
The majority of people do not go to the track often, but downshifting with no rev-matching will have similar effects on your bike on the road, too. They’re tamed but the speeds on the track are always over those at the highway. But, not rev-matching when you downshift can increase the wear and tear that occurs in your engine as well as the other components of the powertrain. Therefore, while not rev-matching when you travel may not result in losing control of your motorbike as quickly, but it could however affect the longevity of your powertrain faster.
How to Rev-Match?
Rev-matching requires three controls to be operated at the same time on the motorcycle. If a downshift is required the rider has to engage the clutch and downshift a gear. Then, press the throttle prior to release the clutch. All of these steps should be completed as one separate function, as they all are interspersed.
If rev-matching is performed properly, the bike is not weakened in any way, and there will not be any jerks in the powertrain either. It’s an art that requires time and effort to perfect and will come in handy in any situations of riding.
